Want to catch smallmouth bass on surface flies ? 17 – +20” smallmouth? Northern pike thrown in to keep things interesting? Scenic beauty? Wildlife viewing? Star gazing? Solitude? Self-reliance?
Departing Ely, MN for BWCA EP16 (Echo Trail) before sunrise on Friday 06/07/2019 AM northward bound for the Lac La Croix area. Return (same EP) Friday 06/14/2019 PM (2020 dates 06/05 – 06/12).
This is a Level 4+ trip.
You MUST be a competent canoeist. While no white water will be encountered we will potentially be dealing with significant wind driven waves on lake crossings.
You MUST be able to carry a 50 – 60 LB load for distances of up to ¾ of a mile or more on moderate to difficult trails. This includes food packs, bear barrels, gear packs, canoe, etc..
You MUST be able to unplug. We’re on our own for the week. No cell service, no internet, nothing that you cannot carry on your back!
We MUST have a current signed liability waiver for participation in this trip.
I carry a Steripen water purification device (in addition to a gravity filter), a SPOT emergency satellite location device, first aid supplies including a suture kit (and lots of duct tape…). I’m Red Cross CPR and Life Guard trained.
We will be double portaging. Plan on a 7 – 8 hour forced paddle / march on both Fridays. We will be base camping (single site) and fishing different locations daily dependent upon wind and weather.
Trip limited to a total of eight (8) participants and four (4) canoes (BWCA regulations).
One night minimum hotel required in Ely, MN on both ends.
Approximate trip cost $ 500 – 600 dependent upon group size, outfitting requirements, etc.. Estimate does NOT include transportation to Ely, MN or a first night’s lodging en-route to Ely, MN if desired.
