When: June 13th 2020 Saturday
Place: Blue River of Harrison County, Indiana (less than one hour from Louisville)
Coordinator: NEEDED
Number of spots: not restricted but please sign up so we can get an event count of participants.
Level: 2 -3, Blue River is similar to the Elkhorn River in KY. Paddlers must be able to navigate riffles, around rocks and possible down trees. Sections of the river will be pre-scouted by DCFF trip leaders.
Equipment: 4-6 weight rods. Floating lines for the popper and dropper rigs, intermediate sink tip lines and streamers for the deeper holes. Indiana fishing licenses required.
Lodging: This is a day trip outing with a cookout at the end of the day at Bob and Missi’s riverside camp.
This will be primarily a boat float/wade experience. We will fish approximately 4 – 6 miles on each river section from various watercraft. Those who do not have access to their own canoes or kayaks we have watercraft available. Float tubes will work in the pools below the camp. Shuttle services will also be provided to move vehicles from the starting access points to the take outs. Wade fishing the areas above and below the riffles and other prime pool habitat will produce fish. Smallmouth is the primary target species but largemouth, Kentucky bass, white bass, rock bass, blue gill, sunfish and more species are abundant. Purple woolly buggers will likely catch you a few hefty channel cats.
Available sections to float: Hoping to have a trip leader for each section.
- Babcock’s Mill to Rothrock’s Mill
- Rothrock’s Mill to (Camp) Harrison Spring – 5.8 miles (private access)
- Camp Merry Ledges to (Camp) Harrison Spring – 3.1 miles (private access)
- Harrison Spring to Blue River Chapel – 3.7 miles (private access)
- Blue River Chapel to Mill’s Crossing – 3.0 miles
Wade fishing is available below the camp and at the mouth of Harrison Spring.
Please pick and identify the section you want to fish when you sign up
Conservation: River trash pick – up bags will be provided to each angler.
8:30 am: Meet at the Corydon Walmart main entrance, first row of the parking lot in front of the semi-trucks. Look for canoes and kayaks on top of cars. Or meet by pre-arrangement with trip leaders at the various access sites. We will try to get on the river by 10:30 am at the put in and fish thru 6 pm. The cook out will begin at around 7 pm. Spouses and significant others invited to join us. You don’t have to be an angler to join us for the day and the cookout fun. You should consider coming to just get the flavor of what Blue River can offer to the fly fisher. It is a beautiful and surprisingly remote river.
Cost: There is no upfront cost on this trip; participants may contribute towards the cookout and campfire spirits.
Directions, meeting locations, and maps will be provided to those who sign up.
Sorry – no dogs and pets allowed, including our own.
