Dates: March 5, 12, 19, 26 and April 2, 9 ,16, 2020
Time: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Contact: Gerry McDaniel (gemcdaniel65@gmail.com, 502-432-2995)
Class size will be limited to 12 people, but you can “audit” (i.e., observe but not build a rod) the class at no cost.
The class will be led by Gerry McDaniel with help from other experienced rod builders in the club. During the class, you will be instructed on each step in building a fly rod. HOWEVER, there will not be enough time during the classes to complete the rod and you will have to spend considerable time at home to finish it. If you keep up with the classes and do your “homework” you will have a finished rod ready to fish by the end of the program.
Gerry will order all the components needed to build a high quality, 4-piece, graphite fly rod. You will have the choice of building one of three rods
9-foot 3 weight – panfish, bluegill, small stream
10-foot 5 weight – excellent for mending drifts
10-foot 7 weight – steelhead/salmon, big streamers
Cost for the fly rod kit is $125 and will contain all parts and materials to build a complete rod.
The Club has wrapping and drying cradles that you can use by paying a refundable deposit of $125. You will use the cradles in class, but mostly at home. The deposit will be refunded upon return of the cradles.
NOTE: You can purchase you own rod blanks, parts and materials but you will need to have them available by the first class (graphite or fiberglass preferred, bamboo at your own risk.)
Subjects covered will include:
- Finding the rod spline and reaming handles
- Installing handle and reel seat
- Guide placement and wrapping
- Embellishments and finishing guide wraps
- Misc catch up
