SUMMARY:Camp Buffalo Bill Anglers Base Camp (Cody\, WY)
DESCRIPTION:August 25 – August 31\, 2024 (Sun – Sat) (Week/Session 4) \nCoordinator:  George Tipker\, george@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-594-2066 \nLocation: Camp Buffalo Bill (50 miles west of Cody\, WY) Yellowstone Anglers’ Basecamp is located at Camp Buffalo Bill\, a Boy Scout Camp along the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River\, just 8 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. \nTrip Level: This is a Level 3 trip (see Trip Suitability for details.) This is primarily a wading trip.  Wading and access to fishing locations range from easy to challenging.  Participants should be proficient waders and self-reliant fly fishers.  Individuals are responsible for determining the suitability of this trip with respect to their skill level and expectations. This is not a beginner trip! \nCost: Total $985.  Please use the following Boys Scouts of America link for a brief overview of the trip and description of what is included AND also to register and pay.  Individuals MUST register and pay on their own directly to Boys Scouts of America Adventure West Council at the following link    Adventure West Council – 2024 Yellowstone Anglers’ Basecamp (scoutingevent.com)  Slots are limited to 32 participants\, are open to the public\, and are filled on a “first-come-first-served” basis. \nA DCFF Important Special Note:  If you are registering\, please also sign up on our DCFF Club Trips sign up page Cody\, WY 2024 Trip  order to let the trip coordinator know who all is attending.  That way future communications/trip meetings/transportation/etc.  information can be disseminated by the trip coordinator.    \nDescription:  One week of fishing some of Wyoming’s finest trout waters near the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park.  Base camp is located on the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River in the Shoshone National Forest — a blue ribbon\, freestone trout fishery.  Access also to waters in Yellowstone and others in Northwest Wyoming.  Cost includes six nights lodging\, three meals/day\, transportation to/from Cody Airport and/or Billings-Logan airport; and daily transportation to/from fishing locations of your choice in the area. \nThe Area – Northwest Wyoming has some of the most scenic territory you will see anywhere. Populated by numerous wildlife species — bear (including Grizzlies)\, mule deer\, elk\, bison\, coyote\, fox\, and more. Truly a beautiful part of our country. \nWeather in August – Temps can range from 30’s to 90’s with averages ranging from mid-50’s to mid-80’s.  It has snowed in late August; in fact\, it snowed the week following the 2020 Group’s trip. It does rain\, with thunderstorms and hail possible. Camp elevation is 6\,400 feet above sea level and the air is dry.  Staying well hydrated is essential to cope with both the elevation and arid air. \nBase Camp – The camp is located on the Shoshone River where there are miles of fishing opportunities. Accommodations are rustic. Cabins consist of bunk beds with a couple of small tables. There is marginal cell service/wi-fi via the wi-fi connection at the Ranger’s office. There are also two (2) land line phones on site for general use\, if necessary. Cabins have electricity but no heat or AC.  Each cabin has windows that can be opened and a fan. You will be responsible for your own linens\, towels\, sleeping bag and pillow. Laundry (free) facilities are available on site. There is a heated shower house with ample showers and facilities. The center of camp activity is the dining hall where all the gatherings and fellowship occur. This is a large building that is open 24 hours a day with complimentary snacks and drinks available. Three meals are provided daily. \nThe Staff – The staff is knowledgeable and accommodating. They will take you wherever you want to go on the river and return to pick you up. The camp has four vans\, and the staff will transport you up or down stream to many fishing locations. If at least 5 folks want to go to Yellowstone fishing locations  (a 1-1/2-hour drive one way) or to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons (a long all-day trip)\, they will arrange for that also. For days you want to get out early\, a continental breakfast will be waiting for you at departure. If you want to stay out longer\, sandwiches are prepared to take with you. If you wish to take professional guided trips out of the fly shops in Cody\, a van will take you to/from Cody as well. \nThe Fishing – The fishing is quite different from around our area. “Humbling” seems the most common descriptor. The water is gin clear\, fast\, and skinny. Wading and walking alongside the river is not easy\, with rocks from pebbles to boulders ranging from basketball to refrigerator size. Expect to catch rainbow\, brown\, and cutthroat — many in the 15+ inch range. They are wild fish that are finicky and spooky. A 10-fish day is an exceptional day. \nThe Gear – Three to six weight rods\, reels and lines work well.  Nymphing is by far the most productive method\, but flies need to be heavier than we would normally fish in our area.  The water is quick and skinny\, and drifts are short\, so the flies need to get down fast and stay down.  We’ll have more information on flies and techniques in the coming months. \nThe Adventure – This trip is about 50% fishing and 50% adventure. Getting to some of the fishing holes is an adventure in itself\, with challenging terrain and critters aplenty.  A favorite non-fishing adventure is a hike to a unique rock formation along a mountain ridge about 1000 ft above the camp. This is a challenging hike but universally agreed by those who did it to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable activities of the trip. \nThe staff can provide a trip to Cody one evening for dinner and a rodeo. Cody is an old town with a lot of history and interesting restaurants. Of course\, there are trips to Yellowstone mixing sightseeing and fishing on the Yellowstone River. \nCost – The entire week costs $985.  You are responsible for your own transportation to Cody or Billings MT airport. Flights range from about $500 to $1200 depending on airport\, baggage charges\, etc.  A 5-day Wyoming non-resident license is $56\, and an additional day is $14. If you go to Yellowstone\, there is an additional license requirement but it’s nominal and can be purchased online. \nClothing & footgear \n\nBring clothes for cool to cold evenings and warm to hot days.\nSandals\, casual sports shoes\, wading boots and shower shoes.   Hiking boots if you plan to go hiking.\nInclude warm sleeping clothes or have a cold weather sleeping bag.\nDon’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent.  Bear spray will be provided. (Buddy fishing is highly recommended because of threat of bears.)\nYou’ll need waders and wading staff. Felt soled boots w/spikes are okay everywhere\, except\, … No felt soles in Yellowstone!!   Plan your boot selection(s) accordingly.

SUMMARY:Cumberland River Trip (Helm's Landing) August 2024
DESCRIPTION:Location: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   August 16th – 18th (Fri – Sun) \nCoordinator:  Joe Gahlinger (joegahl@twc.com; 502-472-3975) \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited opportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details).  All boaters should have experience in moving waters.  When generation starts on the Cumberland\, water levels can quickly rise 15 feet or more.  A PFD is required for all boaters. \nNumber of Spots: 8 \nEquipment:  3 to 8 weight fly rods.  Smaller rods are appropriate for nymph fishing while 8 weight rods are a better choice for streamer or “hopper/dropper” fishing.  Flies include #8 to #18 nymphs\, including stone flies\, pheasant tails\, hare’s ears\, prince\, copper john’s\, midges\, and most other trout flies like mop and egg patterns.  Black\, white and olive wooly buggers are good streamers.  Prominently white shad imitations work well and provide a visual fishing experience when fished from a boat.  Hoppers and other terrestrials will take fish in August and September when fished along walls and high banks. \nFishing License and permits:  You will need a Kentucky fishing license and trout permit. Click here to purchase. There is a $5 vehicle fee to use the Kendall boat ramp at the dam. This fee is waived with a National Park Pass. \nThe Plan:  The club has reserved all 4 rooms at the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s Landing for this outing.  Cost is $110 per person for the two night weekend\, assuming double occupancy in each room; registration and full payment is required to secure your bed. Note that due to escalating costs\, we may have a cash surcharge in addition to the registration fee.  Any refunds for cancelations are at the discretion of the DCFF board.  There are 8 spots on the sign up.  Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be accommodated as floor space allows – contact Joe regarding availability of space. \nDescription of the Waters:  In 2024\, we can expect some sort of a generation schedule with little to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn and early afternoon.  This trip should be considered primarily a boating or floating trip with the possibility of wade fishing on various shoals accessible by boat.  There is also the possibility to wade fish Hatchery Creek.  Go to the Stream Information – Cumberland River page on the DCFF website for more information about the river\, possible floats in the upper section of the river\, and alternative launch locations.  If we get a lot of rain and high-water levels on the tailwater\, there is always the potential to fish for bass or panfish on Lake Cumberland itself. \nDepending on water conditions and the generation schedule\, virtually any small craft can be used on the river.  At 2 or more generators or during high winds\, the river will be “pushy” for inflatable pontoon boats; canoes and kayaks are better\, but skill will be required to safely use them under generation flow conditions.  Small motor-powered craft are the best option if the operator knows how to avoid river obstructions like rocks and logs.  It will be your responsibility to secure a craft and/or find a buddy with a craft.  You can follow other experienced members on the river\, but you need to know how to navigate and operate your boat.  Also\, recognize the need to practice safe boating techniques on the Cumberland; wear a life jacket when you are underway and if you get dumped into the river get to shore ASAP – hypothermia will take over quickly with the water temperatures in the 50s year round! \nLodging:  There are 8 beds available in the rooms.  Linens and towels are provided.  Each room has a cooktop stove (no oven)\, microwave\, small refrigerator\, coffee maker (bring your own coffee and condiments). Dishes\, flat ware and cooking utensils are available\, but if you need something specific for meal preparation\, plan to bring it. There are charcoal grills on the deck.  You are expected to do your dishes and keep the rooms clean.  Please do not leave trash or garbage on the deck – raccoons are a problem. \nMeals:  Breakfast and Lunch are on your own.  We traditionally share supper; volunteer cooks are always appreciated\, and your food costs are reimbursable\, so save those receipts.  Bring a chair to enjoy the fire in the evening (assuming we can source the wood).  Your payment includes the cost of supper and firewood. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Joe Gahlinger (joegahl@twc.com; 502-472-3975).  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.  Click here to sign up.

If you have to cancel we will try find a replacement\, but there are no guarantees. \nFishing\, Canoeing and Camping Adventure\nThe 2023 Boundary Waters trip was my first trip with DCFF and also my first as a new and very inexperienced fly fisherman. I enjoyed the trip immensely – the fishing was great for those who were experienced fly fishers as well as for me as a novice. There was less pressure on how to cast and present the flies since we were in open water with few obstructions. I was able to concentrate on fishing and not retrieving or replacing flies tangled in overhead branches! We enjoyed beaver and eagle sightings each day and usually had a loon calling to begin and end the day. I hope you will consider joining the 2024 outing – I anticipate it will be a fun and memorable trip. If you have questions regarding the trip and accommodations\, please give me a call!\nMichael J. Smith\n502 338 8780 Cell \nTravel: \n\nApproximately 950 miles one way\nApproximately 14.5 hours nonstop including time for gas and pit stops\nGas at $3.50 per gallon\n\nOuting Details: This is a primitive camping trip. We’ll be using Zups Canoe Outfitters. Fishing will be from canoes using 5 to 8 wt. rods with appropriate smallmouth flies. Might also hook walleye and pike. Level 1 ability is sufficient. Some canoe and camping skill is desirable. No portaging involved unless you choose to venture to some remote site off the main lake. SUMMARY:Cumberland River (Helm's Landing) June 2024
DESCRIPTION:Location: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   June 7th – 9th (Fri – Sun) \nCoordinator:  David Campbell\, secretary@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-341-0039 \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited opportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details). Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be accommodated as floor space allows – contact Wes regarding availability of space. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Wes at wes@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-938-2662.  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.  Click here to sign up.

SUMMARY:Greene-Sullivan State Forest & Shakamak State Park\, IN
DESCRIPTION:Dates: May 8 -12\, 2024 \nCoordinators:   \n\nWes Krupiczewicz (wes@derbycityflyfishers.com; 502-938-2662)\nJoe Gahlinger (joe@derbycityflyfishers.com; 502-472-3975)\n\nThe Plan:  This will be the club’s second trip to the area around Linton\, Indiana\, about 2.5 hours West of Louisville.  You can find the 2023 Trip Report on the Website. \nWe will be fishing for bluegill and bass in three Indiana State Land areas. \n\nThe area include Greene-Sullivan State Forest (https://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/properties/greene-sullivan-state-forest/)\nShakamak State Park (https://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/shakamak-state-park/)\nHillenbrand Fish and Wildlife Area ( https://www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/properties/hillenbrand-fwa/ \nThere are a large number of small lakes and impoundments with a variety of small boat (skiff\, canoe\, kayak\, float tube\, etc.) and bank fishing opportunities.  Shakamak State Park also rents boats with trolling motors.\n\nWe have rented two cottages in the Persimmon Lake Loop and can room a total of 16 campers.  The plan is to split meal preparation between the two cabin groups since meal preparation for more than 8 people is difficult.  We may be able to combine some meals\, but we’ve got to work that out. \nDescription of Waters:  This area in Western Indiana is a former coal strip pit area.  There are about 120 small lakes in Greene-Sullivan ranging in size from 3 acres to 120 acres.  The Forest itself has many small lakes with over 50 launch ramps; the Dugger Unit has 13 launch ramps with somewhat larger lakes.  Shakamak has 400 acres of man-made lakes with boat ramps\, canoe launches\, fishing piers\, fish cleaning stations and boat rental.   Hillenbrand has another 25 small lakes.  Greene-Sullivan is about 10 miles and 20 minutes southwest of Shakamak.  Hillenbrand is about 13 miles southeast of Shakamak. \nAccessibility:  With all the launch points\, this is an ideal area for small boats including kayaks and canoes.  Almost all the boat ramps are improved so that the small skiffs like we use on the Cumberland River work; gas motors cannot be used but trolling motor are acceptable. You will need a PFD on your watercraft. \nLevel:  This is a Level 2 trip.  There will not be dedicated fishers to teach beginners fly fishing basics.  There may be teachable opportunities\, but there are no guarantees. \nMeals: \n\nFor now\, plan to bring your own lunch\, snacks\, and beverages of choice.\nI will bring the DCFF coffee pot and coffee for the group. We could use another large coffee pot.\nWe plan to have group breakfasts and suppers. Please indicate your willingness to cook on the sign up. Plan a meal for 8.  If you need ideas on meals\, contact Wes.  Cooks should save receipts since these costs are reimbursable.  Joe and I each have a large 2 burner propane stove that we will bring.\nI’m hoping we catch enough panfish to have fish fries. So bring your filet knives to clean fish and fish baskets/wells to keep fish.\nThere are grocery stores close by\, so we can shop locally and do not have to pack everything in.\nYou need to bring your cooking and meal prep utensils – if you think you’ll need it\, bring it!. We will have paper plates and plastic ware.\n\nLodging:  The Club has rented Persimmon Lake bunk house cottages #1 and #2 in the Shakamak Group camping area. Directions will be provided in the trip updates just prior to the trip.  Each bunk house has 11 double bunk beds.  Each camper will get a lower berth to sleep and the upper bunk for storage.  The cottages have a kitchen with a full refrigerator\, stove/oven and a sink; we will keep the bunk bed next to the kitchen empty for storage.  There are 2 shower stalls\, 2 toilets and 2 vanities. There are two picnic tables and a fire pit outside. \n\nWe must bring our own linens\, towels\, cookware\, camp chairs\, and eating utensils.\nThe bunks have a pretty good foam mattress and most previous participants did not see a need for air mattresses. Pillows\, sheets\, blankets and/or sleeping bags are highly recommended.\nIf you want to be in the same bunkhouse as someone else\, please so state in the questions field on the sign up.\nIf you want to participate but NOT stay in the cottages\, camping spots and cabins are available; you need to make your own arrangements.\nFirewood is available for sale in the Park. We’ll buy firewood for the group fires. No outside firewood is allowed.\nWe can set up popup shelters/canopies.\n\nParking is limited.  We may want to try to figure out how to carpool for this trip.  Other cars may have to park in a group lot which is close to the cottages. \nThe plan limits this trip to 16 participants.  Registration cost for the trip is $140 (payable at sign up) for the four nights and will include the group breakfasts\, suppers and firewood.  There may be a cash up-charge if we burn a lot of wood.  Any registration fee refund is at the discretion of the DCFF Board. \nFishing License and Permits: (All these costs are in addition to the trip registration fee.) \n\nYou need an Indiana Fishing License; these can be purchased on line at Indiana Fishing License.\nFor boat operators\, you also need a Lake Permit ($5/year non-motorized\, $25/year motorized). You can get them at any State Park Office including the one at Greene/Sullivan. These permits are good at all Indiana State parks.\nPark entrance fees are $7 resident and $9 out of state; you will get a parking pass after paying the 1st day entry fee.\n\nEquipment:  3 to 8 weight fly rods\, but if you want to spin or bait fish that is acceptable.  Both topwater and typical nymph flies should work.  Bluegill love mop flies and trout magnets! \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Wes at wes@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-938-2662.  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip. \nClick here to sign up.

SUMMARY:Camp Buffalo Bill Anglers Base Camp (Cody\, WY)
DESCRIPTION:August 27 – Sept 2\, 2023 (Sun – Sat) (Week/Session 4) \nCoordinator:  George Tipker\, george@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-594-2066 \nLocation: Camp Buffalo Bill (50 miles west of Cody\, WY) Yellowstone Anglers’ Basecamp is located at Camp Buffalo Bill\, a Boy Scout Camp along the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River\, just 8 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. \nCost: Total $900.  Please use the following Boys Scouts of America link for a brief overview of the trip and description of what is included AND also to register and pay. Please note that DCFF will not be handling the registrations or payments this year (this is a change from in years past).  Individuals MUST register and pay on their own directly to Boys Scouts of America Adventure West Council at the following link https://scoutingevent.com/062-64371    Slots are limited 30 participants\, are open to the public\, and are filled on a “first-come-first-served” basis.  \nA DCFF Important Special Note:  If you are registering\, please also sign up on our DCFF Club Trips sign up page Cody\, WY 2023 Trip  order to let the trip coordinator know who all is attending. Also have access to waters in Yellowstone and others in Northwest Wyoming. If at least 5 folks want to go to Yellowstone (a 1-1/2-hour drive one way) or to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons (a long all-day trip)\, they will arrange for that also. For days you want to get out early\, a continental breakfast will be waiting for you at departure. If you want to stay out longer\, sandwiches are prepared to take with you. \nCost – The entire week costs $900.  You are responsible for your own transportation to Cody or Billings MT airport. Flights range from about $500 to $1200 depending on airport\, baggage charges\, etc.  A 5-day Wyoming non-resident license is $56\, and an additional day is $14. If you go to Yellowstone\, there is an additional license requirement but it’s nominal.

SUMMARY:Cumberland River Trip August 2023
DESCRIPTION:Location: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   August 18th – 20th  (Fri – Sun) \nCoordinator:  Wes Krupiczewicz wes@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-938-2662 \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited opportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details). Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be accommodated as floor space allows – contact Wes regarding availability of space.  Also\, Wes has reserved 2 rooms for Wednesday and Thursday evenings to extend the outing; Wednesday and Thursday are not included in the registration payment and cost extra – contact Wes if interested. \nDescription of the Waters:  In 2023\, we can expect some sort of a generation schedule with little to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn and early afternoon. There is an icemaker on the property ($2 for approximate 7lb bag.) There are charcoal grills on the deck. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Wes at wes@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-938-2662.  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.  Click here to sign up.

SUMMARY:Obey River Tailwaters Trip
DESCRIPTION:Coordinator: Joe Gahlinger (joe@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-472-3975) \n\n\nSign Up cutoff is midnight June 4th so we can cancel unneeded rooms if necessary. \nThe Plan:  We have room reservations Wednesday and Thursday nights at the Valley View Motel in Celina\, TN. We’ll arrive Wednesday afternoon/evening and fish the Obey on Thursday and Friday.  Note:  There is a Cumberland Tailwaters trip scheduled for 9 thru 11 June at Helm’s Landing. If you desire\, you can fish the Obey on Thursday and Friday then travel to the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s Landing Friday afternoon/evening to fish the Cumberland on Saturday and Sunday.  Note: These are separate trips and you must sign up for each of them separately. \nDescription of the Waters: The Obey River Tailwater is a 7 mile stretch of the Obey River that runs between the Dale Hollow Lake Dam and the Cumberland River. The river is stocked with rainbow and brown trout year-round. Club members have caught both species in good numbers and sizes (it is not uncommon to hook up on 18+ inch fish.) The river is subject to rapidly changing conditions based on the dam release schedule. It is a narrow river with high banks\, thus when dam release begins the river rises rapidly by as much as 12 to 15 feet. The upper half of the river is shallow during non-release periods but can be navigated carefully by shallow draft motorboats. The lower half is deeper and easily navigated at low water.  Google Map Link \nAccessibility: Wading is limited and mostly only accessible via watercraft. So\, this will be a float trip (shallow draft motorboats\, kayaks\, canoes\, etc.)  There are three concrete boat ramps along the river with ample parking available. We typically launch and recover motorboats at the Donaldson Park ramp\, which is at the lower end of the river. We motor up about 2.5 miles to an island and fish our way back down to the ramp. For those with kayaks\, canoes\, etc.\, we’ll organize shuttles for launch and take out. If you do not have a watercraft but would like to come on this trip\, contact Joe Gahlinger for help in getting a seat – but no guarantees. DO NOT SIGN UP until you have made boating arrangements. \nLevel: This is rated a Level 2 Trip (see Trip Suitability for details.) Boat operators should have experience navigating shallow water rivers and dealing with rising water from dam releases. Kayakers\, canoeists\, etc.\, should have experience fishing from a kayak in moving water. PFD’s are required for all. \nMeals: The Valley View Motel has no microwaves or refrigerators and cooking in the rooms is not allowed. Thus\, all meals are on your own. There are a couple restaurants within walking distance of the motel and several others just a short drive away. We can do group dinners depending on participants desires. \nYou can get breakfast sandwiches at a nearby gas station on the way to the ramp if you want to get an early start.  Otherwise\, there is a decent breakfast diner on the way to the ramp for a more leisurely breakfast.  Plan to pack a lunch to eat on the water. \nLodging: We have reserved four rooms at the Valley View Motel in Celina for Wednesday and Thursday nights. These are small\, basic rooms so temper your expectations. They are clean and serviceable and at $65/night (cash)\, $68/night (credit card) per room are a reasonable value. We plan on shared rooms so the cost is half that per night per person. No deposit is required\, you pay at check in. Boat trailer parking is tight but manageable and we can run extension cords to charge trolling motor batteries. As noted under meals\, no cooking is allowed in the rooms and there’s no refrigeration. Campsites are available at the Dale Hollow Damsite Campgrounds immediately adjacent to the boat ramp just below the dam. You can get Campground information and make reservations at https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232564 \nFishing License and permits: You will need a Tennessee All Species fishing license. A 3-day non-resident costs $40.50 and an annual non-resident costs $99.00. You can get more information and buy licenses here. \nEquipment:  3 to 8 weight fly rods. Flies include #8 to #20 nymphs\, including pheasant tails\, hare’s ears\, prince\, copper john’s\, midges\, and most other trout nymphs. Black\, white and olive wooly buggers are good streamers. If all else fails\, bring the Club standby\, catalpa worm patterns (AKA mop flies) or some Trout Magnets. DCFF members have had good results with both. \nTennessee Fishing Guide: You can get more information on Tennessee fishing regulations\, locations\, trout fishing requirements\, etc.\, at  https://www.tn.gov/twra/fishing.html \nSign Up: You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip. SUMMARY:Greene-Sullivan State Forest & Shakamak State Park\, IN
DESCRIPTION:May 10 -14\, 2023 \n  \nCoordinator:  Wes Krupiczewicz \n  \nThe Plan:  This will be the club’s first trip to the area around Linton\, Indiana\, about 2.5 hours West of Louisville.  We will be fishing for bluegill and bass in the lakes in the Greene-Sullivan State Forest (https://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/properties/greene-sullivan-state-forest/) and in Shakamak State Park (https://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/shakamak-state-park/).  Both places can be researched on the links above.  There are a large number of small lakes and impoundments with a variety of small boat (canoe\, kayak\, float tube\, etc) and bank fishing opportunities.  Shakamak State Park also has boats available for rent. \n  \nDescription of Waters:  This area in Western Indiana is a former coal strip pit area.  There are about 120 small lakes in Greene-Sullivan ranging in size from 3 acres to 120 acres.  The Forest itself has many small lakes with over 50 carry down launches; the Drugger Unit has 13 launch ramps with somewhat larger lakes.  Shakamak has 400 acres of man made lakes with boat ramps\, canoe launches\, fishing piers\, fish cleaning stations and boat rental.   Greene-Sullivan is about 10 miles and 20 minutes south of Shakamak. \n  \nAccessibility:  With all the launch points\, this looks like an ideal area for small boats like kayaks and canoes.  Based on the maps\, it looks like there are also carry in opportunities to small lakes without ramps; those might be ideal for float tubes.  You will need a PFD on your watercraft. \n  \nLevel:  This is a Level 2 trip.  There will not be dedicated fishers to teach beginners fly fishing basics.  There may be teachable opportunities\, but there are no guarantees. \n  \nMeals:  For now\, plan to bring you own breakfast and lunch\, unless someone is willing to cook breakfast.  I will bring the DCFF coffee pot and coffee for the group. \n  \nWe will have group suppers on Wednesday thru Saturday.  Cooking volunteers should save receipts since these costs are refundable.  I have a large 2 burner propane stove that I will bring.  I’m hoping we catch enough panfish to have fish fries.   There are grocery stores close by\, so we can shop local and do not have to pack everything in. \n  \nYou need to bring your cooking and eating utensils. \n  \nLodging:  We will stay in Persimmon Lane bunk house cottage #12 in the Shakamak Group camping area.  Google Map Link The bunk house has 3 rooms.  There is a kitchen with a refrigerator\, stove/oven and a sink.  There are 2 shower stalls and 2 toilets.  There are two picnic tables and a fire pit outside.  We will have to bring our own linens\, towels\, cookware and eating utensils.  Firewood is available for sale in the Park.  We can set up a popup shelter. \n  \nThere are only 2 parking spaces at the cottage.  We may want to try to figure out how to carpool for this trip.  Other cars will have to park in a group lot which is close to #12. \n  \nI plan to limit this trip to 8 participants.  Registration cost for the trip is $120 for the four nights and will include the group suppers and firewood.  There may be a cash up-charge if we burn a lot of wood.  Any registration fee refund is at the discretion of the DCFF Board. \n  \nFishing License and Permits:  You need an Indiana Fishing License\, a lake permit ($5/year non-motorized\, $25/year motorized) and entrance fees (possibly as high at $9/day – not sure).  All these costs are in addition to the trip registration fee. \n  \nEquipment:  3 to 8 weight fly rods\, but if you want to spin or bait fish that is acceptable.  Both topwater and typical nymph flies should work.  Bluegill love mop flies and trout magnets! \n  \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Wes at wes@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-938-2662.  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.  Click here to sign up.
