SUMMARY:August 2026 Cumberland River
DESCRIPTION:August 14 – August 16\, 2026 \nLocation: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   August 14 th -16th (Fri – Sun) 2026\nCoordinator:  Brian Kaluzny (bkaluzny@twc.com\, 502-724-3487) \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited\nopportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details).  All boaters should have\nexperience in moving waters.  When generation starts on the Cumberland\, water levels\ncan quickly rise 15 feet or more.  A PFD is required for all boaters. \nNumber of Spots: 8 \nEquipment: 3 to 8 weight fly rods.  Smaller rods are appropriate for nymph fishing while\n8 weight rods are a better choice for streamer or “hopper/dropper” fishing.  Flies include\n#8 to #18 nymphs\, including stone flies\, pheasant tails\, hare’s ears\, prince\, copper\njohn’s\, midges\, and most other trout flies like mop and egg patterns.  Black\, white and\nolive wooly buggers are good streamers.  Prominently white shad imitations work well\nand provide a visual fishing experience when fished from a boat.  Hoppers and other\nterrestrials will take fish in August and September when fished along walls and high\nbanks. \nFishing License and permits: You will need a Kentucky fishing license and trout\npermit. Click here to purchase. There is a $5 vehicle fee to use the Kendall boat ramp\nat the dam. This fee is waived with a National Park Pass. \nThe Plan:  The club has reserved all 4 rooms at the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s\nLanding for this outing.  Cost is $110 per person for the two night weekend\, assuming\ndouble occupancy in each room; registration and full payment is required to secure your\nbed. Note that due to escalating costs\, we may have a cash surcharge in addition to the\nregistration fee.  Any refunds for cancelations are at the discretion of the DCFF board.\nThere are 8 spots on the sign up.  Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be\naccommodated as floor space allows – contact Joe regarding availability of space. \nDescription of the Waters:  We can usually expect some a generation schedule with\nlittle to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn\nand early afternoon.  This trip should be considered primarily a boating or floating trip\nwith the possibility of wade fishing on various shoals accessible by boat.  There is also\nthe possibility to wade fish Hatchery Creek.  Go to the Stream Information\n– Cumberland River page on the DCFF website for more information about the river\,\npossible floats in the upper section of the river\, and alternative launch locations.  If we\nget a lot of rain and high-water levels on the tailwater\, there is always the potential to\nfish for bass or panfish on Lake Cumberland itself. \nDepending on water conditions and the generation schedule\, virtually any small craft\ncan be used on the river.  At 1 or more generators or during high winds\, the river will be\n“pushy” for inflatable pontoon boats; canoes and kayaks are better\, but skill will be\nrequired to safely use them under generation flow conditions.  Small motor-powered\ncraft are the best option if the operator knows how to avoid river obstructions like rocks\nand logs.  It will be your responsibility to secure a craft and/or find a buddy with a craft.\nYou can follow other experienced members on the river\, but you need to know how to\nnavigate and operate your boat.  Also\, recognize the need to practice safe boating\ntechniques on the Cumberland; wear a life jacket when you are underway and if you get\ndumped into the river get to shore ASAP – hypothermia will take over quickly with the\nwater temperatures in the 50s year round! \nLodging:  There are 8 beds available in the rooms.  Linens and towels are provided.\nEach room has a cooktop stove (no oven)\, microwave\, small refrigerator\, coffee maker\n(bring your own coffee and condiments). Dishes\, flat ware and cooking utensils are\navailable\, but if you need something specific for meal preparation\, plan to bring it.\nThere are charcoal grills on the deck.  You are expected to do your dishes and keep the\nrooms clean.  Please do not leave trash or garbage on the deck – raccoons are a\nproblem. \nMeals:  Breakfast and Lunch are on your own.  We traditionally share supper; volunteer\ncooks are always appreciated\, and your food costs are reimbursable\, so save those\nreceipts.  Bring a chair to enjoy the fire in the evening.  Your payment includes the\ncost of supper and firewood. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Brian Kaluzny (bkaluzny@twc.com\, 502-\n724-3487).  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.\nClick here to sign up.

Friends-Fun-Fishing \nEveryone has had a busy year. We look forward to hearing all the stories around the fire. Don’t forget the Bourbon! \nBring your big guns\, Kids! Looks like there’s plenty of food for our fish friends. We’ll be hosting festivities again at the Bueter Compound at 3200 S. James Road\, North of Baldwin\, MI \nOur target species\, the mighty King Salmon\, will again be pursued in the Wild and Scenic Pere Marquette River by anglers using FLY RODS and FLIES ONLY\, following the not only letter of the law\, but in the spirit of the law. \nCampsites are plenty\, but space for Camper Trailers\, Pop-Ups\, Motor Homes\, or whatever contraption you’re thinking of dragging up is limited. Availability for 8 campers & 6 tents with electric access only. Unlimited for non electric sites. 1st reserved\, 1st choice of location. Limited access to water and power. No generators after 10 pm or during meal times. There are cabins available at CLOUD 9 RESORT (for those who don’t want to rough it for this weekend). Don’t delay in calling for a reservation 231-745-3070 (they will go fast). We need a head count by Sept 1st\, as to prepare our menus!! \nBrian and Keith Bartram once again will smoke absolute pig heaven on Saturday night. Our usual suspects led by our own camp camp coordinator\, will again prepare a super-duper up-north breakfast on Saturday morning and a Fantastic dinner Saturday night. \nThe 24 hour Campfire tradition will continue\, providing the backdrop for the usual hijinks\, exchange of regional information (mostly lies)\, recounting of the day’s adventures (again\, mostly lies)\, and permanently cementing friendships. Enclosed areas for food service\, fly tying\, and activities will be put up\, allowing the spirit of mentorism and camaraderie to flourish once again. Classes for Proven fly patterns will be offered\, as well as new experimental patterns. Along with classes for proven knots and rigging maybe some new stuff\, too. We may even offer a class to help your casting prowess. Be sure to bring your tying stuff—you’ve got things to offer and learn!! \n50/50 Raffle this year to help cover the cost of upgrades & other needs for camp.
