This is a wading trip and some of the wading can be moderately challenging. A wading staff is highly recommended\, and many past participants use studded wading boots. \nNumber of spots 20 \nEquipment: 3-6 wt rods\, floating lines\, #8-14 nymphs\, #10-12 bead head crackle backs\, midges\, egg patterns\, mop flies\, Chicago Flies (white\, black\, and olive)\, woolly buggers and misc. other streamers. Don’t forget your waders\, net\, wading staff & boots. \nA NC fishing license is required.  As of Sept 2019\, a Trout Stamp is no longer required. Click here to purchase. \nWe have also acquired a map of local access points. Click here to view. \nOuting Details: We’ll be staying in the Dillsboro\, NC area to trout fish in several of the delayed harvest (i.e.\, catch and release) streams in the area. The Tuckasegee River\, West Fork of the Pigeon River\, the Upper Nantahala River\, Laurel River\, and the Davidson River\, and the  are all within a 1-hour drive of Dillsboro. These rivers provide some of the best fishing in the area. Past trips have produced a very successful catch with fish in the 17–20-inch range being common. \n*** Construction Alert*** Due to the recent damage from Hurricane Helene\, and the subsequent flooding\, has Interstate 40 closed until 2028\, a suggested route would be going through the Smokey Mountains National Park via HW\, 441\, exiting off of I-40 at Highway 66 to 441 through the park\, exiting to Cherokee to Highway 74 East to and Dillsboro-Silva. UPDATE The I-40 corridor is scheduled to reopen 3.1.2025 to one lane each way with a 40 mph speed limit. So it may be a way to access the Shelton Laurel and Hot Springs area. \nLodging: You will be responsible for making your own lodging arrangements. I have negotiated a block of rooms at the Best Western Plus River Escape Inn & Suites\, NC\, Address: 248 WBI Dr.\, Dillsboro\, NC 28725. 828-586-6060.  When booking your room at the Best Western https://www.bestwestern.com/en_US/book/hotel-rooms.34143.html?groupId=B31VM2I1 ( double occupancy\, 2-queen beds) be sure to tell them you are with the DCFF club for the special room rate (to be negotiated) for Wednesday through Friday nights. (The group discount expires the 25th of March) \nUPDATE: The North Carolina WRC announced they will be stocking the Tuckasegee river April 1-4\, in Jackson County\, literally from the parking lot of our motel. (this could make things much more interesting! \nMeals: You will be responsible for all meals. A hot breakfast is included in the hotel cost with your stay. We are planning on a carry out dinner at the hotel for two nights from a local restaurant for those that are interested. \nGuided Fishing: If you are interested in a wading or float guided trip\, Maggie Valley Fly Shop is offering a 20% discount to DCFF members for this trip. You can make arrangements with the shop at: (828) 476-6710 or https://www.maggievalleyflyshop.com/. \nEstimated Cost: The three-night trip will cost approximately $350 – $400 per person for lodging (based on shared room)\, license\, gas\, and food; there is no deposit required as each participant is responsible for their own costs.  You will also be asked during sign up if you are willing to share a room and if you want to carpool. I will try to coordinate carpooling and shared lodging. \nClick here to sign up.

SUMMARY:Otter Creek Trip (FULL)
DESCRIPTION:February 28-March 2nd \nAccommodations: Rustic bunk house located in the campground area \nNumber of Spots available: 8 \nCost: $60 a person \nTrip Coordinator:  Mark Vincent\, mark@derbycityflyfishers.com\, (502) 500-1561. \nLevel 3 Trip: (See Trip Suitability for details). This is a DIY wade fishing trip\, with access to the park provided.  Please obey all fishing regulations.  For those not familiar with Otter Creek it is located in Meade County about 30 minutes outside Louisville.  Well stocked with Rainbow Trout and several access points if you are willing to hike a bit.  Due to its proximity to Louisville\, it does receive quite a bit of fishing pressure.  Please pay close attention to the weather and bring appropriate clothing and gear. \nEquipment: 2 to 6 weight fly rods.  This is mostly a nymph stream\, on occasion a good hatch will occur and dry fly action can be rewarding.  Bring the usual fly patterns\, too various to mention\, keep in mind this is really not a beginner trip.  Waders are a must\, this is winter so wet wading could be detrimental to your health.  Nets will increase your landing percentage and is much easier on the fish.  Wading staff can be a good item to have as water could be cloudy depending on what type of weather we have leading up to the trip. \nFishing License and Permits: Kentucky fishing license is required\,  expiration for the 2024 season is on the 2/28/25.  Make sure you purchase the 2025 license before you leave home as internet coverage can be inconsistent. \nThe Plan: You may arrive early on Friday (28th) and fish during the day.  We will be having a community dinner that night.  Saturday we’ll start with breakfast\, fish during the day\, and dinner that evening\, time to be determined.  If the weather permits campfire on Friday and Saturday nights is one of the highlights of the trip\, be sure to bring a camp chair.  Check out is on Sunday you may fish as long as you like or until the park closes\, whichever comes first. \nCost of meals and lodging are included in the price\, however lunch you will be on your own.  Bring snacks and your choice of beverages for the weekend.  We’ll be pitching in to assist with cooking and cleaning duties. \nThe bunkhouse has heat\, electricity\, no running water\, no bathroom\, and a small refrigerator. Please bring coolers for your drinks\, lunch items\, snacks etc. Access is provided within the campground to a heated shower house and bathrooms\, bring your own towel and toiletries. \nYou will need a sleeping bag\, pillow\, or whatever sleep system you prefer for a comfortable night sleep.  There are 2-3 inch foam pads on each bunkbed\, but they are not the most comfortable.  If you have a sleeping pad to place on top of these mats we highly recommend bringing them along. \nEar plugs are not required but strongly encouraged.  The Trip Signup is live\, click here to register. \nIf you have any questions about this trip please contact Mark Vincent (502) 500-1561.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:Due to the threat of inclement weather\, it has been decided to cancel this months meeting.  \nMeetings are open to everyone\, you do not have to be a member to attend.  Typical format: 10-15 minute “Tackle Time”  presentation on some aspect of Fly Fishing followed by a business segment to introduce new members and guests\,  take questions and get updates on fishing from attendees\, announce/discuss upcoming events/trips\, and conduct any required club business. All this is followed by a 30 – 45 minute presentation by a guest speaker on a fly fishing related topic. \nThe primary focus of this meeting will be our annual Fly Fishing 101 presentation. If you are new to fly fishing or just inexperienced\, the club will give you all the information you need to get equipped (without breaking the bank) and put you on the water. The sport can seem complex and somewhat overwhelming to those just getting their waders wet. Don’t miss this meeting to help simplify the experience and gain some confidence. Walk away with an understanding of the basic information and tools you need to get started.
