SUMMARY:Spring 2026 Bardstown Bluegill Trip
DESCRIPTION:Coordinator: Steve Cullen S.Cullen325i@gmail.com ; 502-599-7494 \nThe Plan:  This will be the club’s second trip here thanks to the generosity of DCFF\nmember Lou Kaufman who has graciously offered us access to the venue.\nThis trip will be limited to 8 participants due to space constraints on the water.\nThe registration fee is $25 to cover dinner and breakfast as well as firewood.\nWe will be fishing two private lakes near to the area around Bardstown Kentucky\, about\n40 minutes South of Louisville.\nThese are small lakes with limited launch opportunity so we will be limiting this to\nKayaks and Canoes only. Wade or bank fishing isn’t really an option other than one pier\non the larger of the two lakes.\nWe will be fishing for Bluegill and Bass. We don’t plan on any fish fry’s but anglers may\nkeep some of their catch. No limit on Bass\, 10 Bluegill each.\nWe may arrive any time on the afternoon on the 20th and may fish if you like after\nchecking in and getting a little orientation. Supper followed by a fire at the cottage that\nevening. Group Breakfast the morning of the 21st\, after which you may fish either lake for\nas long as you like. \nLodging:  Lou has a cottage on the property which he has also made available to us.\nThere’s a large open room room as well as a three season room with plenty of space for\ncots or air mattresses and sleeping bags.\nWe have a kitchen and bath. We must bring our own towels\, cookware\, camp chairs\,\nand eating utensils.\nYou will need to bring your own cot or air mattress\, sleeping bag or linens and blankets\nand a pillow.\nThere are ample electrical outlets\, but you might want to bring a short extension cord\nand/or power strip to handle your electronic needs.\nWe’ll buy firewood for the group fires.\nWe have space to set up popup shelters/canopies if you choose to bring them but we\nhave no plans to bring the clubs.\nWhile we intend to leave the cottage open all day for bathroom access\, we would\nappreciate it if your gear was packed up and out of the cottage after breakfast. \nParking adjacent to the cottage should be ample but…  Carpooling would be a good\nidea if feasible.\nWe will be able to drop boats lake side. The property is gated and generally secure but\nyour gear is left at your own risk so please plan accordingly. \nMeals:\nPlan to bring your own lunch\, snacks\, and beverages of choice.\nI will bring the DCFF coffee pot\, coffee and condiments for the group.\nWe plan to have group supper the evening of the 20th and breakfast the morning of the\n21st. Both of those meals are open for a volunteer preparer. (You’ll have help and\nyour offers are greatly appreciated!)\nWe’ll tentatively plan suppers at 7PM but will adjust as needed.\nYou need to bring your cooking and meal prep/serving utensils – if you think you’ll need\nit\, bring it! We will have paper plates and plastic ware. \nDescription:  These are small impoundments with a varied shore line.\nDepths can be up to 14 feet\, but most areas are significantly shallower. There are a\nvariety of Bass\, as well as Red Ear and Bluegill in these lakes.\nAccessibility:  Access to the larger of the two lakes is firm and relatively shallow in\nslope meaning trailer launch is difficult if not unlikely. Plan on walking your boats in. That\nwill definitely be the case on the smaller lake where launch is limited to a walk in at the\nend of the dam.  Gas motors cannot be used but trolling motors are acceptable.\nLevel:  This is a Level 2 trip.  There will not be dedicated fishers to teach beginners fly\nfishing basics.\nFishing License and Permits: This is private property and fishing licenses are not\nrequired.\nEquipment:  3 to 6 weight fly rods\, but if you want to spin or bait fish don’t hesitate to\nbring your gear.  Both topwater and typical nymph flies should work.  Bluegills love mop\nflies and trout magnets! While I can’t say what things will be like in October\, the top\nwater bite was good in June though nymphing in deeper water was also productive. \nTo sign up and pay\, please click here.

SUMMARY:Green-Sullivan State Forest & Shakamak State Park 2026
DESCRIPTION:May 6\, 2025 – May 9\, 2026 \nDates: May 6-9\, 2026 (Wednesday – Saturday)\nCheck-in NET 4pm May 6 th \, Checkout NLT 11am May 9 th\nNOTE: We are not staying overnight Saturday as Sunday is Mother’s Day\n(Optional) Typically\, we meet for lunch at a TBD diner in Dugger\, IN on Wednesday\, get\nour launch permits\, fish that afternoon and get back to the bunkhouses sometime after\n4pm. \nCoordinator:\nJoe Gahlinger\, joe@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-472-3975 \nThe Plan: This will be the club’s fourth trip to the area around Linton\, Indiana\, about 2.5\nhours West of Louisville.  You can find the 2023 Trip Report on the Website. I’ll provide\nmore details about lakes\, access points and experiences from previous trips as we get\ncloser to the trip. \nWe will be fishing for bluegill and bass in three Indiana State Land areas. \nThe area includes Greene-Sullivan State Forest\nhttps://www.in.gov/dnr/forestry/properties/greene-sullivan-state-forest/ \nShakamak State Park \nhttps://www.in.gov/dnr/state-parks/parks-lakes/shakamak-state-park/ \nHillenbrand Fish and Wildlife Area \nhttps://www.in.gov/dnr/fish-and-wildlife/properties/hillenbrand-fwa/ \nThere are many (about 200) small lakes and impoundments with a variety of\nsmall boat (skiff\, canoe\, kayak\, float tube\, etc.) and bank fishing opportunities.\nShakamak State Park also rents boats with trolling motors. \nWe have rented two cottages (bunkhouses) in the Persimmon Lake Loop which can\naccommodate a total of 16 campers. \nDescription of Waters: This area in Western Indiana is a former coal strip pit area.\nThere are about 120 small lakes in Greene-Sullivan ranging in size from 3 acres to 120\nacres.  The Forest itself has many small lakes with over 50 launch ramps; the Dugger\nUnit has 13 launch ramps with somewhat larger lakes.  Shakamak has 400 acres of\nman-made lakes with boat ramps\, canoe launches\, fishing piers\, fish cleaning stations\nand boat rental.   Hillenbrand has another 25 small lakes.  Greene-Sullivan is about 10 \nmiles and 20 minutes southwest of Shakamak.  Hillenbrand is about 13 miles southeast\nof Shakamak. \nAccessibility: With all the launch points\, this is an ideal area for small boats including\nkayaks and canoes.  Almost all the boat ramps can handle boats like we use on the\nCumberland River; gas motors cannot be used but trolling motors are acceptable. You\nwill need a PFD on your watercraft. \nLevel: This is a Level 2 trip.  There will not be dedicated fishers to teach beginners fly\nfishing basics.  There may be teachable opportunities\, but there are no guarantees. \nMeals:\n For now\, plan to bring your own lunch\, snacks\, and beverages of choice.\n I will bring the DCFF coffee pot\, filters\, coffee and condiments for the group.\n We plan to have group breakfasts and suppers. Please indicate your willingness\nto cook on the sign up (meals are a team effort\, we just need a head chef for\nplanning and provisioning each meal.) Plan a meal for 16.  If you need ideas on\nmeals\, contact me.  Cooks should save receipts since these costs are\nreimbursable.\n I’m hoping we catch enough panfish to have at least one fish fry either Thursday\nor Friday evening. So\, bring your filet knives to clean fish and fish\nbaskets/stringers/wells to keep fish.\n There are grocery stores close by\, so we can shop locally and do not have to\npack everything in.\n You need to bring your cooking and meal prep utensils – if you think you’ll need\nit\, bring it! We will have paper plates and bowls\, plasticware\, foil chafing pans\,\npaper towels\, zip lock bags\, cleaning supplies\, charcoal and standard\ncondiments. \nLodging: The Club has rented Persimmon Lake bunk house cottages #1 and #2 in\nthe Shakamak Group camping area. Directions will be provided in the trip updates just\nprior to the trip.  Each bunk house has 11 double bunk beds.  We plan on 8 campers per\nbunkhouse. Each camper will get a lower berth for sleeping and the upper bunk for\nstorage.  The cottages have a kitchen with a full refrigerator\, stove with oven\,\nmicrowave and a sink; we will keep the bunk bed next to the kitchen empty for storage.\nThere are 2 shower stalls\, 2 toilets and 2 vanities. There are two picnic tables and a fire\npit outside.\n We must bring our own linens\, towels\, cookware\, camp chairs\, and eating\nutensils. \n The bunks have a pretty good foam mattress\, and most previous participants did\nnot see a need for air mattresses. Pillows\, sheets\, blankets and/or sleeping bags\nare highly recommended. \n If you want to be in the same bunkhouse as someone else\, please so state in the\nremarks field on the sign up. \n If you want to participate but NOT stay in the cottages\, camping spots and\ncabins are available; you need to make your own arrangements. \n We’ll buy firewood for the group fires. No outside firewood is allowed.\nParking is limited.  Carpooling is highly recommended. \nThe plan limits this trip to 16 participants.  Registration cost for the trip is $95 (payable\nat sign up) for the three nights and will include the group breakfasts\, suppers and\nfirewood.  There may be a cash up-charge if we burn a lot of wood.  Any registration fee\nrefund is at the discretion of the DCFF Board. \nFishing License and Permits: (All these costs are in addition to the trip registration\nfee.)\n You need an Indiana Fishing License; these can be purchased on line at Indiana\nFishing License.\n For boat operators\, you also need a Lake Permit ($5/year non-motorized\,\n$25/year motorized (includes trolling motor only watercraft). You can get them at\nany State Park Office including the one at Greene/Sullivan. These permits are\ngood at all Indiana State parks for the calendar year.\n Park entrance fees are $7 resident and $9 out of state; you will get a parking\npass after paying the 1st day entry fee.\nEquipment: 3 to 8 weight fly rods\, but if you want to spin or bait fish go for it.  Both\ntopwater and typical nymph flies should work.  Bluegill love mop flies and trout magnets!\nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Joe at joe@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-\n472-3975.  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.\nClick here to sign up.

SUMMARY:June 2026 Cumberland River
DESCRIPTION:June 5\, 2026 – June 7\, 2026 \nLocation: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   June 5 th – 7th (Fri – Sun) 2026 \nCoordinator:  Mark Vincent (smarkvincent1@gmail.com; 502-500-1561) \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited\nopportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details).  All boaters should have\nexperience in moving waters.  When generation starts on the Cumberland\, water levels\ncan quickly rise 15 feet or more.  A PFD is required for all boaters. \nNumber of Spots: 8 \nEquipment: 3 to 8 weight fly rods.  Smaller rods are appropriate for nymph fishing while\n8 weight rods are a better choice for streamer or “hopper/dropper” fishing.  Flies include\n#8 to #18 nymphs\, including stone flies\, pheasant tails\, hare’s ears\, prince\, copper\njohn’s\, midges\, and most other trout flies like mop and egg patterns.  Black\, white and\nolive wooly buggers are good streamers.  Prominently white shad imitations work well\nand provide a visual fishing experience when fished from a boat.  Hoppers and other\nterrestrials will take fish in August and September when fished along walls and high\nbanks. \nFishing License and permits: You will need a Kentucky fishing license and trout\npermit. Click here to purchase. There is a $5 vehicle fee to use the Kendall boat ramp\nat the dam. This fee is waived with a National Park Pass. \nThe Plan:  The club has reserved all 4 rooms at the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s\nLanding for this outing.  Cost is $110 per person for the two night weekend\, assuming\ndouble occupancy in each room; registration and full payment is required to secure your\nbed. Note that due to escalating costs\, we may have a cash surcharge in addition to the\nregistration fee.  Any refunds for cancelations are at the discretion of the DCFF board.\nThere are 8 spots on the sign up.  Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be\naccommodated as floor space allows – contact Joe regarding availability of space.\nDescription of the Waters:  We can usually expect some a generation schedule with\nlittle to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn\nand early afternoon.  This trip should be considered primarily a boating or floating trip\nwith the possibility of wade fishing on various shoals accessible by boat.  There is also\nthe possibility to wade fish Hatchery Creek.  Go to the Stream Information\n– Cumberland River page on the DCFF website for more information about the river\,\npossible floats in the upper section of the river\, and alternative launch locations.  If we\nget a lot of rain and high-water levels on the tailwater\, there is always the potential to\nfish for bass or panfish on Lake Cumberland itself. \nDepending on water conditions and the generation schedule\, virtually any small craft\ncan be used on the river.  At 1 or more generators or during high winds\, the river will be\n“pushy” for inflatable pontoon boats; canoes and kayaks are better\, but skill will be\nrequired to safely use them under generation flow conditions.  Small motor-powered\ncraft are the best option if the operator knows how to avoid river obstructions like rocks\nand logs.  It will be your responsibility to secure a craft and/or find a buddy with a craft.\nYou can follow other experienced members on the river\, but you need to know how to\nnavigate and operate your boat.  Also\, recognize the need to practice safe boating\ntechniques on the Cumberland; wear a life jacket when you are underway and if you get\ndumped into the river get to shore ASAP – hypothermia will take over quickly with the\nwater temperatures in the 50s year round! \nLodging:  There are 8 beds available in the rooms.  Linens and towels are provided.\nEach room has a cooktop stove (no oven)\, microwave\, small refrigerator\, coffee maker\n(bring your own coffee and condiments). Dishes\, flat ware and cooking utensils are\navailable\, but if you need something specific for meal preparation\, plan to bring it.\nThere are charcoal grills on the deck.  You are expected to do your dishes and keep the\nrooms clean.  Please do not leave trash or garbage on the deck – raccoons are a\nproblem. \nMeals:  Breakfast and Lunch are on your own.  We traditionally share supper; volunteer\ncooks are always appreciated\, and your food costs are reimbursable\, so save those\nreceipts.  Bring a chair to enjoy the fire in the evening.  Your payment includes the\ncost of supper and firewood. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Mark Vincent\n(smarkvincent1@gmail.com; 502-500-1561).  You must be a current DCFF member to\nsign up for this trip. \nClick here to sign up.

But with full kitchens they should be no problem.  However\, if you prefer you can purchase breakfast and lunch at the restaurant on a walk in basis. \nPayment: Payment will be handled in three steps: \n\nAt sign up (click here) you will be required to pay a $212\, non-refundable deposit to DCFF.  This covers the cabin reservation deposit. Registration has been extended\, but we need to target an even number so we can maintain 2 participants per boat. If you need to cancel\, we’ll make every effort to find someone to replace you on the trip and refund your deposit\, but no guarantees. If we can’t fill your spot\, your deposit can be rolled forward to the next year.\nThe remaining balance ($675 US) will be paid directly to Waterfalls Lodge upon arriving at the Lodge.\nBefore leaving the lodge\, you will settle up with them for gas and any additional charges you incurred during the week.\n\nYou are encouraged to go to the Waterfalls Lodge website and check things out. SUMMARY:Obey River Tailwater Trip
DESCRIPTION:Obey River Tailwater Trip \nLocation: Obey River Tailwater (Celina\, TN)\nDates: July 15th – 17th (Wed – Fri) (arriving Wed Jul 15th late afternoon/evening) \nCoordinator: Joe Gahlinger (joe@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-472-3975) I’ll contact\nparticipants several weeks in advance of the trip to finalize details. We can coordinate\nput in times/locations\, arrange shuttles for kayakers if necessary\, make sure first timers\nare buddied up with a veteran to help navigate the river (no guarantee they will show\nyou their honey holes\, but you might try a bribe;-) and talk about eating arrangements. \nLevel 2 Trip: This is rated a Level 2 Trip (see Trip Suitability for details.) Boat\noperators should have experience navigating shallow water rivers and dealing with\nrising water from dam releases. Kayakers\, canoeists\, etc.\, should have experience\nfishing from a kayak in moving water. PFDs are required for all. \nNumber of Spots: 16 (based on number of rooms available at The Valley View Motel in Celina\, TN) \nDeposit: No Deposit. However\, please sign up (link at bottom) so we know who is\ncoming and what the boat arrangements/needs are. \nThe Plan: We’ll arrive Wednesday afternoon/evening and fish the Obey on Thursday\nand Friday.  Note: There is a Cumberland Tailwaters trip scheduled for 17 thru 19 July at\nHelm’s Landing. If you desire\, you can fish the Obey on Thursday and Friday then travel\nto the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s Landing Friday afternoon/evening to fish the\nCumberland on Saturday and Sunday. Note: These are separate trips and you must\nsign up for each of them separately. \nDescription of the Waters: The Obey River Tailwater is a 7 mile stretch of the Obey\nRiver that runs between the Dale Hollow Lake Dam and the Cumberland River. The\nriver is stocked with rainbow and brown trout year-round. Club members have caught\nboth species in good numbers and sizes (18+ inch fish are available.) The river is\nsubject to rapidly changing conditions based on the dam release schedule. It is a\nnarrow river with high banks\, thus when dam release begins the river rises rapidly by as\nmuch as 12 to 15 feet. The upper half of the river is shallow during non-release periods\nbut can be carefully navigated by shallow draft motorboats. The lower half is deeper and\neasily navigated at low water. \nAccessibility: Wading is limited and mostly only accessible via watercraft. So\, this will\nbe a float trip (shallow draft motorboats\, kayaks\, canoes\, etc.)  There are three\nconcrete boat ramps (no docks or piers) along the river with ample parking available.\nWe typically launch and recover motorboats at the Donaldson Park ramp\, which is at the lower end of the river. We motor up 2.5 to 5 miles depending on water conditions and fish our way back down to the ramp. For those with kayaks\, canoes\, etc.\, we’ll organize shuttles for launch and take out. If you do not have a watercraft but would like to come on this trip\, contact Joe Gahlinger for help in getting a seat – but no\nguarantees. DO NOT SIGN UP until you have made boating arrangements. \nMeals: All meals are personal responsibility. Depending on your lodging arrangements\nthere may be informally organized dinners at a local restaurant. See Lodging options\nbelow for in-room cooking amenities. \nLodging: There are a few lodging options: \n1. Valley View Motel\, Celina\, TN – This is a no-frills motel we’ve used in the past. Its\nbiggest advantage is that it is five minutes from the Donaldson Ramp. Rooms have a\nmini-fridge and coffee maker\, but cooking is not allowed in rooms. These are small\,\nbasic rooms so temper your expectations. They are clean and serviceable. The price is\n$80/night/room (taxes and fees included.) There are two standard beds per room\, so\nroom sharing is economical. Boat trailer parking is tight but manageable. You’ll need a long (50′ at least) extension cord to charge trolling motor batteries\, so bring your own. Also\, bring a 3-prong to 2-prong electric outlet adapter. I have eight rooms reserved in my name (Joe Gahlinger) for the trip (units 1 thru 8). You will pay when you arrive (cash preferred.) Tell them you are with my group. \n2. Campsites are available at the Dale Hollow Damsite Campgrounds immediately\nadjacent to the boat ramp just below the dam. You can get Campground information and\nmake reservations at https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232564 \n3. Burkesville\, KY – There are a couple options here\, but no rooms have been\nreserved. You will need to make your own reservations. Burkesville is about 30 minutes\nfrom the Donaldson Park Ramp.\nRiverfront Lodge – 305 Keen St\, Burkesville\, KY 42717 (270) 864-3300\n$80/night\nAlpine Resort – 700 Hill St\, Burkesville\, KY 42717 (270) 864-7100 $138 –\n$149/night \nFishing License and permits: You will need a Tennessee All Species fishing license. A\n3-day non- resident with Trout permit costs $40 (+$3.52 Handling Fees.) An annual non-\nresident with Trout permit costs $98.00 (+$3.52 Handling Fees.) You can get more\ninformation and buy licenses here.\nSign Up here.

SUMMARY:July 2026 Cumberland River (SOLD OUT)
DESCRIPTION:July 17\, 2026 – July 19\, 2026 \nLocation: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   July 17th – 19 th  (Fri – Sun) 2026 \nCoordinator:  Joe Gahlinger (joe@derbycityflyfishers.com; 502-472-3975)\nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited\nopportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details). Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be\naccommodated as floor space allows – contact Joe regarding availability of space. \nDescription of the Waters:  We can usually expect some a generation schedule with\nlittle to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn\nand early afternoon. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Joe Gahlinger (joegahl@twc.com; 502-\n472-3975).  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.\nClick here to sign up.
