SUMMARY:North Carolina Fall Trip
DESCRIPTION:Tuckasegee River Below Webster\, NC\nLocation: Waynesville\, NC \nDates: October 10th – 13th\, 2023 (Tues thru Fri) \nCoordinators:\nMichael Ragan\, meragan1022@gmail.com\, 502-489-7078 \nLevel 2 Trip – You Should be able to manage your leader and tippet and tie-on flies.  You should also be able to cast at least 30 feet. This is a wading trip and some of the wading can be moderately challenging. A wading staff is highly recommended\, and many past participants use studded wading boots. \nNumber of spots 12-20 \nEquipment: 3-6 wt rods\, floating lines\, #8-14 nymphs\, #10-12 bead head crackle backs\, midges\, egg patterns\, mop flies\, Chicago Flies (white\, black\, and olive)\, woolly buggers and misc. other streamers. \nA NC fishing license is required.  As of Sept 2019\, a Trout Stamp is no longer required. Click here to purchase. \nOuting Details: We’ll be staying in the Waynesville\, NC area to trout fish in several of the delayed harvest (i.e.\, catch and release) streams in the area. The Tuckasegee River\, West Fork of the Pigeon River\, the Upper Nantahala River\, Laurel River\, Davidson River\, and the Shelton-Laurel Creek are all within a 1-hour drive of Waynesville. These rivers provide some of the best fishing in the area. Past trips have produced a very successful catch with fish in the 17–20-inch range being common. \nLodging: You will be responsible for making your own lodging arrangements. I have negotiated a block of rooms at the Econo Lodge in Waynesville\, NC\, Address: 232 State Rd 1202\, Waynesville\, NC 28786\, (828) 246-6201. The Econo Lodge provides a complimentary continental breakfast starting at 6:30am. When booking your room at the Econo Lodge\, be sure to tell them you are with the DCFF club for the $86 room rate for Tuesday through Thursday nights and $145 per night for Friday and Saturday nights. \nOn the past several trips many participants have stayed at the Jonathan Creek Inn in Maggie Valley www.jonathancreekinn.com. This is an option as well. \nMeals: You will be responsible for all meals. Usually\, I will arrange a group dinner at a local restaurant on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for those who are interested.  \nGuided Fishing: If you are interested in a wading or float guided trip\, Maggie Valley Fly Shop is offering a 20% discount to DCFF members for this trip. You can make arrangements with the shop at: (828) 476-6710 or https://www.maggievalleyflyshop.com/. \nEstimated Cost: The three-night trip will cost approximately $350 – $400 per person for lodging (based on shared room)\, license\, gas\, and food; there is no deposit required as each participant is responsible for their own costs.  You will also be asked during sign up if you are willing to share a room and if you want to carpool. I will try to coordinate carpooling and shared lodging. \nClick here to sign up. \nMichael

SUMMARY:Cumberland River Trip September 2023
DESCRIPTION:Location: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   September 15th – 17th  (Fri – Sun) \nCoordinator:  Wes Krupiczewicz wes@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-938-2662 \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited opportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details).  All boaters should have experience in moving waters.  When generation starts on the Cumberland\, water levels can quickly rise 15 feet or more.  A PFD is required for all boaters. \nNumber of Spots: 8 \nEquipment:  3 to 8 weight fly rods.  Smaller rods are appropriate for nymph fishing while 8 weight rods are a better choice for streamer or “hopper/dropper” fishing.  Flies include #8 to #18 nymphs\, including stone flies\, pheasant tails\, hare’s ears\, prince\, copper john’s\, midges\, and most other trout flies like mop and egg patterns.  Black\, white and olive wooly buggers are good streamers.  Prominently white shad imitations work well and provide a visual fishing experience when fished from a boat.  Hoppers and other terrestrials will take fish in August and September when fished along walls and high banks. \nFishing License and permits:  You will need a Kentucky fishing license and trout permit. Click here to purchase. There is a $5 vehicle fee to use the Kendall boat ramp at the dam. This fee is waived with a National Park Pass. \nThe Plan:  The club has reserved all 4 rooms at the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s Landing for this outing.  Cost is $110 per person for the two night weekend\, assuming double occupancy in each room; registration and full payment is required to secure your bed. Note that due to escalating costs\, we may have a cash surcharge in addition to the registration fee.  Any refunds for cancelations are at the discretion of the DCFF board.  There are 8 spots on the sign up.  Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be accommodated as floor space allows – contact Wes regarding availability of space.  Also\, Wes has reserved 2 rooms for Wednesday and Thursday evenings to extend the outing; Wednesday and Thursday are not included in the registration payment and cost extra – contact Wes if interested. \nDescription of the Waters:  In 2023\, we can expect some sort of a generation schedule with little to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn and early afternoon.  This trip should be considered primarily a boating or floating trip with the possibility of wade fishing on various shoals accessible by boat.  There is also the possibility to wade fish Hatchery Creek.  Go to the Stream Information – Cumberland River page on the DCFF website for more information about the river\, possible floats in the upper section of the river\, and alternative launch locations.  If we get a lot of rain and high-water levels on the tailwater\, there is always the potential to fish for bass or panfish on Lake Cumberland itself. \nDepending on water conditions and the generation schedule\, virtually any small craft can be used on the river.  At 2 or more generators or during high winds\, the river will be “pushy” for inflatable pontoon boats; canoes and kayaks are better\, but skill will be required to safely use them under generation flow conditions.  Small motor-powered craft are the best option if the operator knows how to avoid river obstructions like rocks and logs.  It will be your responsibility to secure a craft and/or find a buddy with a craft.  You can follow other experienced members on the river\, but you need to know how to navigate and operate your boat.  Also\, recognize the need to practice safe boating techniques on the Cumberland; wear a life jacket when you are underway and if you get dumped into the river get to shore ASAP – hypothermia will take over quickly with the water temperatures in the 50s year round! \nLodging:  There are 8 beds available in the rooms.  Linens and towels are provided.  Each room has a cooktop stove (no oven)\, microwave\, small refrigerator\, coffee maker (bring your own coffee and condiments). Dishes\, flat ware and cooking utensils are available\, but if you need something specific for meal preparation\, plan to bring it.  There is an icemaker on the property ($2 for approximate 7lb bag.) There are charcoal grills on the deck.  You are expected to do your dishes and keep the rooms clean.  Please do not leave trash or garbage on the deck – raccoons are a problem. \nMeals:  Breakfast and Lunch are on your own.  We traditionally share supper; volunteer cooks are always appreciated\, and your food costs are reimbursable\, so save those receipts.  Bring a chair to enjoy the fire in the evening (assuming we can source the wood).  Your payment includes the cost of supper and firewood. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Wes at wes@derbycityflyfishers.com or 502-938-2662.  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.  Click here to sign up.

SUMMARY:Camp Buffalo Bill Anglers Base Camp (Cody\, WY)
DESCRIPTION:August 27 – Sept 2\, 2023 (Sun – Sat) (Week/Session 4) \nCoordinator:  George Tipker\, george@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-594-2066 \nLocation: Camp Buffalo Bill (50 miles west of Cody\, WY) Yellowstone Anglers’ Basecamp is located at Camp Buffalo Bill\, a Boy Scout Camp along the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River\, just 8 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. \nTrip Level: This is a Level 3 trip (see Trip Suitability for details.) This is primarily a wading trip.  Wading and access to fishing locations range from easy to challenging.  Participants should be proficient waders and self-reliant fly fishers.  Individuals are responsible for determining the suitability of this trip with respect to their skill level and expectations. This is not a beginner trip!  \nCost: Total $900.  Please use the following Boys Scouts of America link for a brief overview of the trip and description of what is included AND also to register and pay. Please note that DCFF will not be handling the registrations or payments this year (this is a change from in years past).  Individuals MUST register and pay on their own directly to Boys Scouts of America Adventure West Council at the following link https://scoutingevent.com/062-64371    Slots are limited 30 participants\, are open to the public\, and are filled on a “first-come-first-served” basis.  \nA DCFF Important Special Note:  If you are registering\, please also sign up on our DCFF Club Trips sign up page Cody\, WY 2023 Trip  order to let the trip coordinator know who all is attending.  That way future communications/trip meetings/transportation/etc.  information can be disseminated by the trip coordinator.    \nDescription:  One week of fishing some of Wyoming’s finest trout waters near the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park.  Base camp is located on the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River in the Shoshone National Forest — a blue ribbon\, freestone trout fishery.  Also have access to waters in Yellowstone and others in Northwest Wyoming.  Cost includes six nights lodging\, three meals/day\, transportation to/from Cody Airport and/or Billings-Logan airport; and daily transportation to/from fishing locations of your choice in the area. \nThe Area – Northwest Wyoming has some of the most scenic territory you will see anywhere. Populated by numerous wildlife species — bear (including Grizzlies)\, mule deer\, elk\, bison\, coyote\, fox\, and more. Truly a beautiful part of our country. \nWeather in August – Temps can range from 30’s to 90’s with averages ranging from mid-50’s to mid-80’s.  It has snowed in late August; in fact\, it snowed the week following the 2020 Group’s trip. It does rain\, with thunderstorms and hail possible. Camp elevation is 6\,400 feet above sea level and the air is dry.  Staying well hydrated is essential to cope with both the elevation and arid air. \nBase Camp – The camp is located on the Shoshone River where there are miles of fishing opportunities. Accommodations are rustic. Cabins consist of bunk beds with a couple of small tables. There is marginal cell service/wi-fi via the wi-fi connection at the Ranger’s office. There are also two (2) land line phones on site for general use\, if necessary. Cabins have electricity but no heat or AC.  Each cabin has windows that can be opened and a fan. You will be responsible for your own linens\, towels\, sleeping bag and pillow. Laundry (free) facilities are available on site. There is a heated shower house with ample showers and facilities. The center of camp activity is the dining hall where all the gatherings and fellowship occur. This is a large building that is open 24 hours a day with complimentary snacks and drinks available. Three meals are provided daily. \nThe Staff – The staff is knowledgeable and accommodating. They will take you wherever you want to go on the river and return to pick you up. The camp has four vans\, and the staff will transport you up or down stream to many fishing locations. If at least 5 folks want to go to Yellowstone (a 1-1/2-hour drive one way) or to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons (a long all-day trip)\, they will arrange for that also. For days you want to get out early\, a continental breakfast will be waiting for you at departure. If you want to stay out longer\, sandwiches are prepared to take with you. \nThe Fishing – The fishing is quite different from around our area. “Humbling” seems the most common descriptor. The water is gin clear\, fast\, and skinny. Wading and walking alongside the river is not easy\, with rocks from pebbles to boulders ranging from basketball to refrigerator size. Expect to catch rainbow\, brown\, and cutthroat — many in the 15+ inch range. They are wild fish that are finicky and spooky. A 10-fish day is an exceptional day. \nThe Gear – Three to six weight rods\, reels and lines work well.  Nymphing is by far the most productive method\, but flies need to be heavier than we would normally fish in our area.  The water is quick and skinny\, and drifts are short\, so the flies need to get down fast and stay down.  We’ll have more information on flies and techniques in the coming months. \nThe Adventure – This trip is about 50% fishing and 50% adventure. Getting to some of the fishing holes is an adventure in itself\, with challenging terrain and critters aplenty.  A favorite non-fishing adventure is a hike to a unique rock formation along a mountain ridge about 1000 ft above the camp. This is a challenging hike but universally agreed by those who did it to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable activities of the trip. \nThe staff can provide a trip to Cody one evening for dinner and a rodeo. Cody is an old town with a lot of history and interesting restaurants. Of course\, there are trips to Yellowstone mixing sightseeing and fishing on the Yellowstone River. \nCost – The entire week costs $900.  You are responsible for your own transportation to Cody or Billings MT airport. Flights range from about $500 to $1200 depending on airport\, baggage charges\, etc.  A 5-day Wyoming non-resident license is $56\, and an additional day is $14. If you go to Yellowstone\, there is an additional license requirement but it’s nominal. \nClothing & footgear \n\nBring clothes for cool to cold evenings and warm to hot days.\nSandals\, casual sports shoes\, wading boots and shower shoes.   Hiking boots if you plan to go hiking.\nInclude warm sleeping clothes or have a cold weather sleeping bag.\nDon’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent.  Bear spray will be provided. (Buddy fishing is highly recommended because of threat of bears.)\nYou’ll need waders and wading staff. Felt soled boots w/spikes are okay everywhere\, except\, … No felt soles in Yellowstone!!   Plan your boot selection(s) accordingly.
