SUMMARY:Cumberland River Trip (Helm’s Landing) August 2025
DESCRIPTION:Location: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   Lodging — August 15th – 16th (Fri & Sat nights)   Fishing – Sat. 16th & Sun. 17th \nCoordinator:  Brian Kaluzny\, brian@derbycityflyfishers.com ; 502-472-3975) \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited opportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details).  All boaters should have experience in moving waters.  When generation starts on the Cumberland\, water levels can quickly rise 15 feet or more.  A PFD is required for all boaters. \nNumber of Spots: 8 \nEquipment:  3 to 8 weight fly rods.  Smaller rods are appropriate for nymph fishing while 8 weight rods are a better choice for streamer or “hopper/dropper” fishing.  Flies include #8 to #18 nymphs\, including stone flies\, pheasant tails\, hare’s ears\, prince\, copper john’s\, midges\, and most other trout flies like mop and egg patterns.  Black\, white and olive wooly buggers are good streamers.  Prominently white shad imitations work well and provide a visual fishing experience when fished from a boat.  Hoppers and other terrestrials will take fish in August when fished along walls and high banks. \nFishing License and permits:  You will need a Kentucky fishing license and trout permit. Click here to purchase. There is a $5 vehicle fee to use the Kendall boat ramp at the dam. This fee is waived with a National Park Pass. \nThe Plan:  The club has reserved all 4 rooms at the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s Landing for this outing.  Cost is $120 per person for the two nights\, assuming double occupancy in each room; registration and full payment is required to secure your bed. Note that due to escalating costs\, we may have a cash surcharge in addition to the registration fee.  Any refunds for cancelations are at the discretion of the DCFF board.  There are 8 spots on the sign up.  Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be accommodated as floor space allows – contact Brian regarding availability of space. \nDescription of the Waters:  In 2025\, we can expect some sort of a generation schedule with little to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn and early afternoon.  This trip should be considered primarily a boating or floating trip with the possibility of wade fishing on various shoals accessible by boat.  We will launch at Helm’s Landing with the Kendall ramp and Winfrey’s Landing ramp as options and your preference.  There is also the possibility to wade fish Hatchery Creek.  Go to the Stream Information – Cumberland River page on the DCFF website for more information about the river\, possible floats in the upper section of the river\, and alternative launch locations.  If we get a lot of rain and high-water levels on the tailwater\, there is always the potential to fish for bass or panfish on Lake Cumberland itself. \nDepending on water conditions and the generation schedule\, virtually any small craft can be used on the river.  At 2 or more generators or during high winds\, the river will be “pushy” for inflatable pontoon boats; canoes and kayaks are better\, but skill will be required to safely use them under generation flow conditions.  Small motor-powered craft are the best option if the operator knows how to avoid river obstructions like rocks and logs.  It will be your responsibility to secure a craft and/or find a buddy with a craft.  You can follow other experienced members on the river\, but you need to know how to navigate and operate your boat.  Also\, recognize the need to practice safe boating techniques on the Cumberland; wear a life jacket when you are underway and if you get dumped into the river get to shore ASAP – hypothermia will take over quickly with the water temperatures in the 50s year-round! \nLodging:  There are 8 beds available in the rooms.  Linens and towels are provided.  Each room has a cooktop stove (no oven)\, microwave\, small refrigerator\, coffee maker (bring your own coffee and condiments). Dishes\, flat ware and cooking utensils are available\, but if you need something specific for meal preparation\, plan to bring it. There are charcoal grills on the deck.  You are expected to do your dishes and keep the rooms clean.  Please do not leave trash or garbage on the deck – raccoons are a problem. \nMeals:  Breakfast and Lunch are on your own.  Supper provided Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:00 eastern daylight saving time. DESCRIPTION:August 24 – August 30\, 2025 (Sun – Sat) (Week/Session 4) \nCoordinator:  George Tipker\, george@derbycityflyfishers.com\, 502-594-2066 \nLocation: Camp Buffalo Bill (50 miles west of Cody\, WY) Yellowstone Anglers’ Basecamp is located at\nCamp Buffalo Bill\, a Boy Scout Camp along the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River\, just 8\nmiles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. \nTrip Level: This is a Level 3 trip (see Trip Suitability for details.) This is primarily a wading trip.  Wading\nand access to fishing locations range from easy to challenging.  Participants should be proficient waders\nand self-reliant fly fishers.  Individuals are responsible for determining the suitability of this trip with\nrespect to their skill level and expectations. That way\nfuture communications/trip meetings/transportation/etc.  information can be disseminated by the\ntrip coordinator. \nDescription:  One week of fishing some of Wyoming’s finest trout waters near the East Entrance of\nYellowstone National Park.  Base camp is located on the banks of the North Fork of the Shoshone River\nin the Shoshone National Forest — a blue ribbon\, freestone trout fishery.  Access also to waters in\nYellowstone and others in Northwest Wyoming.  Cost includes six nights lodging\, three meals/day\,\nunlimited snacks and fruit; laundry facilities; transportation to/from Cody Airport; and daily\ntransportation to/from fishing locations of your choice in the area. \nThe Area – Northwest Wyoming has some of the most scenic territory you will see anywhere. Populated\nby numerous wildlife species — bear (including Grizzlies)\, mule deer\, elk\, bison\, coyote\, fox\, and more.\nTruly a beautiful part of our country. \nWeather in August – Temps can range from 30’s to 90’s with averages ranging from mid-50’s to mid-\n80’s.  It has snowed in late August; in fact\, it snowed the week following the 2020 Group’s trip. It does\nrain\, with thunderstorms and hail possible. Camp elevation is 6\,400 feet above sea level and the air is\ndry.  Staying well hydrated is essential to cope with both the elevation and arid air. \nBase Camp – The camp is located on the Shoshone River where there are miles of fishing opportunities.\nAccommodations are rustic. Cabins consist of bunk beds with a couple of small tables. There is marginal\ncell service and wi-fi . There are also two (2) land line phones on site for general use\, if necessary. Cabins\nhave electricity but no heat or AC.  Each cabin has windows that can be opened and a fan. You will be\nresponsible for your own linens\, towels\, sleeping bag and pillow. Laundry (free) facilities are available on\nsite. There is a heated shower house with ample showers and facilities. The center of camp activity is the \ndining hall where all the gatherings and fellowship occur. This is a large building that is open 24 hours a\nday with complimentary snacks and drinks available. Three meals are provided daily. \nThe Staff – The staff is knowledgeable and accommodating. They will take you wherever you want to go\non the river and return to pick you up. The camp has four- six vans\, and the staff will transport you up or\ndown stream to many fishing locations. If at least 5 folks want to go to Yellowstone fishing locations  (a\n1-1/2-hour drive one way) or to Jackson Hole and the Grand Tetons (a long all-day trip)\, they will\narrange for that also. For days you want to get out early\, a continental breakfast will be waiting for you\nat departure. If you want to stay out longer\, sandwiches are prepared to take with you. If you wish to\ntake professional guided trips out of the fly shops in Cody\, a van will take you to/from Cody as well.\nThe Fishing – The fishing is quite different from around our area. “Humbling” seems the most common\ndescriptor. The water is gin clear\, fast\, and skinny. Wading and walking alongside the river is not easy\,\nwith rocks from pebbles to boulders ranging from basketball to refrigerator size. Expect to catch\nrainbow\, brown\, and cutthroat — many in the 15+ inch range. They are wild fish that are finicky and\nspooky. A 10-fish day is an exceptional day. \nThe Gear – Three to six weight rods\, reels and lines work well.  Nymphing is by far the most productive\nmethod\, but flies need to be heavier than we would normally fish in our area.  The water is quick and\nskinny\, and drifts are short\, so the flies need to get down fast and stay down.  We’ll have more\ninformation on flies and techniques in the coming months. \nThe Adventure – This trip is about 50% fishing and 50% adventure. Getting to some of the fishing holes\nis an adventure in itself\, with challenging terrain and critters aplenty.  A favorite non-fishing adventure is\na hike to a unique rock formation along a mountain ridge about 1000 ft above the camp. This is a\nchallenging hike but universally agreed by those who did it to be one of the most enjoyable and\nmemorable activities of the trip. \nThe staff can provide a trip to Cody one evening for dinner and a rodeo. Cody is an old town with a lot of\nhistory and interesting restaurants. Of course\, there are trips to Yellowstone mixing sightseeing and\nfishing on the Yellowstone River. \nCost – The entire week costs  $1200.  You are responsible for your own transportation to Cody WY.\nFlights range from about $500 to $1200 depending on baggage charges\, etc.  A 5-day Wyoming non-\nresident license is $56\, and an additional day is $14. If you go to Yellowstone\, there is an additional\nlicense requirement but it’s nominal and can be purchased online. \nClothing & footgear\n Bring clothes for cool to cold evenings and warm to hot days.\n Sandals\, casual sports shoes\, wading boots .   Hiking boots if you plan to go hiking.\n Include warm sleeping clothes or have a cold weather sleeping bag.\n Don’t forget sunscreen and insect repellent.  Bear spray will be provided. (Buddy fishing is highly\nrecommended because of threat of bears.)\n You’ll need waders and wading staff. Felt soled boots w/spikes are okay everywhere\, except\,\n… No felt soles in Yellowstone!!   Plan your boot selection(s) accordingly.
