SUMMARY:August 2026 Cumberland River
DESCRIPTION:August 14 – August 16\, 2026 \nLocation: Riverside Retreat\, Helm’s Landing \nDates:   August 14 th -16th (Fri – Sun) 2026\nCoordinator:  Brian Kaluzny (bkaluzny@twc.com\, 502-724-3487) \nLevel 3 Trip:  This is a trip for experienced anglers and there will be limited\nopportunities for training (see Trip Suitability for details).  All boaters should have\nexperience in moving waters.  When generation starts on the Cumberland\, water levels\ncan quickly rise 15 feet or more.  A PFD is required for all boaters. \nNumber of Spots: 8 \nEquipment: 3 to 8 weight fly rods.  Smaller rods are appropriate for nymph fishing while\n8 weight rods are a better choice for streamer or “hopper/dropper” fishing.  Flies include\n#8 to #18 nymphs\, including stone flies\, pheasant tails\, hare’s ears\, prince\, copper\njohn’s\, midges\, and most other trout flies like mop and egg patterns.  Black\, white and\nolive wooly buggers are good streamers.  Prominently white shad imitations work well\nand provide a visual fishing experience when fished from a boat.  Hoppers and other\nterrestrials will take fish in August and September when fished along walls and high\nbanks. \nFishing License and permits: You will need a Kentucky fishing license and trout\npermit. Click here to purchase. There is a $5 vehicle fee to use the Kendall boat ramp\nat the dam. This fee is waived with a National Park Pass. \nThe Plan:  The club has reserved all 4 rooms at the Riverside Retreat at Helm’s\nLanding for this outing.  Cost is $110 per person for the two night weekend\, assuming\ndouble occupancy in each room; registration and full payment is required to secure your\nbed. Note that due to escalating costs\, we may have a cash surcharge in addition to the\nregistration fee.  Any refunds for cancelations are at the discretion of the DCFF board.\nThere are 8 spots on the sign up.  Anyone wanting to stay over only 1 night will be\naccommodated as floor space allows – contact Joe regarding availability of space. \nDescription of the Waters:  We can usually expect some a generation schedule with\nlittle to no flow in the early morning and generation starting sometime between dawn\nand early afternoon.  This trip should be considered primarily a boating or floating trip\nwith the possibility of wade fishing on various shoals accessible by boat.  There is also\nthe possibility to wade fish Hatchery Creek.  Go to the Stream Information\n– Cumberland River page on the DCFF website for more information about the river\,\npossible floats in the upper section of the river\, and alternative launch locations.  If we\nget a lot of rain and high-water levels on the tailwater\, there is always the potential to\nfish for bass or panfish on Lake Cumberland itself. \nDepending on water conditions and the generation schedule\, virtually any small craft\ncan be used on the river.  At 1 or more generators or during high winds\, the river will be\n“pushy” for inflatable pontoon boats; canoes and kayaks are better\, but skill will be\nrequired to safely use them under generation flow conditions.  Small motor-powered\ncraft are the best option if the operator knows how to avoid river obstructions like rocks\nand logs.  It will be your responsibility to secure a craft and/or find a buddy with a craft.\nYou can follow other experienced members on the river\, but you need to know how to\nnavigate and operate your boat.  Also\, recognize the need to practice safe boating\ntechniques on the Cumberland; wear a life jacket when you are underway and if you get\ndumped into the river get to shore ASAP – hypothermia will take over quickly with the\nwater temperatures in the 50s year round! \nLodging:  There are 8 beds available in the rooms.  Linens and towels are provided.\nEach room has a cooktop stove (no oven)\, microwave\, small refrigerator\, coffee maker\n(bring your own coffee and condiments). Dishes\, flat ware and cooking utensils are\navailable\, but if you need something specific for meal preparation\, plan to bring it.\nThere are charcoal grills on the deck.  You are expected to do your dishes and keep the\nrooms clean.  Please do not leave trash or garbage on the deck – raccoons are a\nproblem. \nMeals:  Breakfast and Lunch are on your own.  We traditionally share supper; volunteer\ncooks are always appreciated\, and your food costs are reimbursable\, so save those\nreceipts.  Bring a chair to enjoy the fire in the evening.  Your payment includes the\ncost of supper and firewood. \nSign Up:  If you have any questions\, contact Brian Kaluzny (bkaluzny@twc.com\, 502-\n724-3487).  You must be a current DCFF member to sign up for this trip.\nClick here to sign up.

SUMMARY:3RFF Reunion Cookout & Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Hello Everyone\, \n\nWe are less than a few weeks away from our first “3RFF Reunion”. As you know this was formally our Annual Three Rivers Fly Fishers Membership Cookout and Gathering\, that was held at the Southwest Conservation Club in Ft. Wayne\, IN.\n\nThere has been a change to the location for the upcoming reunion event. SWCC will not be able to host the cookout and gathering this year for us\, so Kerry Shipman has\, graciously and generously\, offered to host the first reunion event at his property. Kerry has a very nice spacious and open area\, with ample room for testing your lawn casting skills with that favorite fly rod if you so desire. He also has a nice sized pond where you can try your luck at bass\, bluegill and channel cats. So bring your fly rod and that box full of flies you’ve been tying up and go at it. Hint: dry flies\, popper flies and other topwater bugs\, along with small streamers and wooly buggers\, etc\, all seem to get the fish’s attention. Kerry has them well trained so you can enjoy your time on the water. He has requested no jet skis please. 🙂\nThere will be ample parking on site as well. So\, bring your lawn chair and a smile\, and plan on a great laid back day of fellowship\, comradery and reconnecting with old friends. Hope to see you there. And a big  “shout out” to Kerry for his wonderful hospitality !!\n\nWe will be having the usual cookout meal agenda as in the past. Possibly burgers\, brats\, hotdogs\, sausage patties or a mix. Assorted bags of chips\, with potato salad and macaroni salad or coleslaw. There’s always an assortment of cookies\, and we’ll have soda pop and bottled water. If you wish to bring a dish\, a dessert item\, or something special to share\, by all means feel free to do so\, but it’s not required. Either way\, we’ll mix it up\, we won’t go hungry and we’ll just have a good time. We have not yet set an exact time to eat\, so we may just keep the grill fired up\, come and go and graze as we please\, and just enjoy a relaxing day together. We will put out any last minute details or information as needed as we move forward. DESCRIPTION:May is the first of our four monthly outdoor meetings over the summer months. \nVenues have space for casting instruction so bring your rods and reels or use the club rods and reels to get some introductory instruction or work on improving your casting skills. \nSome venues will have access to water for fishing and/or practicing your casting under actual fishing conditions. \nA meal of pulled BBQ\, sides\, soft drinks and water will be available for $10.00 per person.  BYOB if desired.
