North Carolina Spring Trip

West Fork of Pigeon River

Level 2 Trip: You Should be able to manage your leader and tippet and tie-on flies.  You should also be able to cast at least 30 feet. Instruction will be available upon request. This is a wading trip and some of the wading can be moderately challenging. A wading staff is highly recommended, and many past participants use studded wading boots.

Number of spots: Ideally 12-20

Equipment: 3-6 wt rods, floating lines, #8-14 nymphs, #10-12 bead head crackle backs, midges, egg patterns, mop flies, Chicago Flies (white, black, and olive), woolly buggers and miscellaneous other streamers. Euro Nymphing is also popular on all waters. Note: No scented lures (e.g., Berkley Trout Worms) allowed on the Delayed Harvest waters.  Trout magnets are okay.

NC Inland Fishing license is required.  Trout Stamp is included in this license.  Click here to purchase.

Outing Details:  We’ll be staying in the Waynesville/ Maggie Valley, NC area to trout fish in several of the delayed harvest (i.e., catch and release) streams in the area. The Tuckasegee River, West Fork of the Pigeon River, the Upper Nantahala River, Laurel River, Davidson River, and the Shelton-Laurel Creek are all within a 1-hour drive of Waynesville and provide some of the best fishing in the area. Past trips have produced a very successful catch with fish in the 17–20-inch range common.

Lodging: You will be responsible for making your own lodging arrangements. Note: Sharing a room significantly reduces cost of trip.

  • The Econo Lodge in Waynesville, NC 232 Phillips Rd, Waynesville, NC (828-246-6201) is holding 8 2-double bed rooms for club members until March 5th. After that date they will open unreserved rooms to the public.  The Econo Lodge provides a complimentary continental breakfast starting at 6:30am. When booking your room at the Econo Lodge ask for the Derby City Fly Fishers rooms, $90 room. 
  • On the past several trips many participants have stayed at the Jonathan Creek Inn in Maggie Valley, 4324 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC (828-936-1232). As of January 17th, there were plenty of rooms available. There is no group rate, but they offer AARP, Military, AAA, and Senior Discounts. Room rates vary based on type of room.
  • There are several other lodging options in the Maggie Valley/Waynesville area which you can explore on your own.

Meals: You will be responsible for all meals. Reservations have been made for Wednesday and Thursday evenings for those who are interested.

  • Wednesday, 7:00pm, Bear Waters Brewing Company, 4352 Soco Road, Maggie Valley, NC (next to Johnathan Creek Inn.)
  • Thursday, 7:00pm, Bocelli’s Italian Eatery, 319 N Haywood St, Waynesville, NC
  • You will be asked on the trip sign up to RSVP for each Group Dinner
  • You are on your own for dinner Friday and Saturday evenings

Estimated Cost: The four-night trip will cost approximately $500 -$700 per person for lodging (based on shared room), license, gas, and food; there is no deposit required as each participant is responsible for their own costs.  Use Comment Field in sign up the let coordinators know if you want to share a room and/or a ride.
