DCFF Rod Building Class
One of the more exciting flyfishing moments is catching “the big one” using the fly you tied on the flyrod you made! If you are interested in building your own rod, the opportunity is here.
- A five-session rod building class is scheduled starting May 30, meeting June 13th, 20th, 26th and July 11th thereafter.
- Classes will be held at Cabela’s in Louisville (Google Map Link) and start at 6:30 pm lasting approximately 2 hours.
- Class will be limited to 6 DCFF paid members.
- Rods will be 9’, 4 pc, graphite, 3wt to 8wt, you pick weight. If you prefer, you can order your own components (just check that box on the registration page.) If you are not sure what weight rod or have other questions, call Jim Bearden at 502-439-6804 or John Froehlich at 270-314-0362.
- The “pieces and parts” could be as much as $150.00 for the bigger weight rods. Jim has agreed to be the “bank,” place order when you register and pay him at first class. Once he places the order he will inform you of the price. Once completed, you will have a rod that might cost as much as $300+ off the rack at the fly shop.
- All necessary tools will be loaned ($125.00 refundable deposit required for wrapping cradle and drying turner).
- Cutoff date for registration is May 20 to allow sufficient time to get materials.
- Jim Bearden will lead the class with assistance from Gerry McDaniel, especially for “spineing” the rods.

DCFF Fly Tying
DCFF Fly Tying is scheduled for the 4th Wednesday of every month (except for November and December) in Louisville at Cabela’s and then again on the following Thursday in Clarksville at Bass Pro Shops. Start time is 6:30 pm and class is over by 8:00pm (usually earlier.) Tools and materials are provided at no cost, but feel free to bring your own. Beginners are welcome, and experienced tyers will be available for individual instruction.
Open to the public. You do not have to be a member to attend, so come on out and give it a try and meet some Derby City Fly Fishers members.
New for 2024, all Fly Tying presentations will be recorded so members can participate remotely using Zoom — how neat is that! An updated list of materials will be published for each fly and distributed in a pending weekly email update so Zoom participants can also take part from home or on the road using their own tools and materials.
