LEVEL 2 Trip – See DCFF Trip Information and Suitability for more information
The Lake Barkley Bluegill fishing trip is the first weekend of May and should be a great fishing opportunity! Three days after a full moon. In previous years, catch has included 2 pound redear, 3 pound smallmouth and 5 pound largemouth.
5, and 6 weight fly rods and floating lines are appropriate. If you pursue largemouth bass, consider a bigger rod. Flies include deer hair poppers with rubber legs, black and blue gill with rubber legs, ants with rubber legs, surface poppers with rubbers legs, bottom bouncers with rubber legs, jig head flies with rubber legs (see a trend?) and trout magnets.
You have a choice of camping in the primitive section of Craven Bay or motel stay. There is no registration fee for this trip; instead, you will pay your own way in real time. Camping coordinator is John Froehlich. Cost is $9.00 per night per site and two tents can easily share a site.
One of the following three motels are recommended in order of increasing price levels:
Barkley Dam Motel (270-362-4263) Google Map
Relax Inn (270-388-2285) Google Map
Days Inn (270-388-4060) Google Map
Rooms fill fast since we are competing with bass tournaments. You should make your hotel reservations as soon as you decide to go.
Come prepared for cooking in primitive camping, restaurants are not convenient to the camping area. Bring your own food and drinks.
Canoes, kayaks, and motor boats are necessary as bank fishing is near non-existent. A map of forest service roads to launch sites in the area will be provided. There is an excellent boat launch ramp very close to the camp.
While this is a Level 2 trip, all are welcome and there will be limited opportunities for beginner instruction. If you have any questions, contact John by phone or johnfroehlich9014@gmail.com .
